Bosco to act against teacher
Dec. 27: The Madras high court has directed Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Egmore to take action on a complaint against a teacher who allegedly humiliated and abused students.
Justice P. Jyothimani’s directive came on a petition by Srinivas Rajan, the father of R. Sudharsan, a ninth standard student of the school, who sought action by the Director of Matriculation Schools against Don Bosco for not acting on his complaint of December 1, 2010, seeking that action be taken against the teacher, Tharmen Fernandez.
“Instead of the Director of Matriculation Schools being asked to take action against the school, the school should be directed to take action on the complaint of the petitioner within four weeks,” the judge said.
The petitioner, in a complaint signed by parents of other students of the school, made various allegations against the teacher. The complaint said Mr Fernandez, a history teacher, had made derogatory remarks about religion and passed dirty comments against other teachers and parents. Mr Fernandez used abusive language and his behaviour was shocking and condemnable, the complaint said.
“Even though several complaints had been made to the school, no action has been taken against the teacher,” the petitioner said. “Whenever I raised the issue, school officials gave me evasive replies.”
He claimed to have learnt that there were many complaints against the teacher by fellow teachers, parents and students. “The abusive treatment of the students not only violates their right to protection from violence but is also counter-productive to their learning,” the petitioner added.
